You might say to yourself, wait a minute ….. I don’t feel like a business owner yet …..! That’s OK. Let’s pretend for a while ….. just like method acting ….. So, imagine that you are a business owner who wants to know how to be successful… First, you may become curious how people make decisions so that you can influence them most easily ….. You may begin by reviewing some of the latest findings in psychology and how they can help you to change belief: Robert Cialdini in his brilliant books “Influence: Science and Practice” and “Influence The Psychology of Persuasion” has created a set of tools to influence people to make good decisions:

  1. Reciprocation – People tend to return a favour. So, create something of value for your target market, give them an experience of what it will be like to do business with you, sell a low value or even a free project, perform well and you will increase the probability that you will get the opportunity to continue to build a relationship and profit.
  2. Commitment and Consistency – If people commit, orally or in writing, to an idea or goal, they are more likely to honour that commitment. Even if the original incentive or motivation is removed after they have already agreed, they will continue to honour the agreement. So, when you create your business goals later in this workbook you will write them down, discuss them with one of your colleagues and share them with the group to increase your commitment.
  3. Social Proof – People will do things that they see other people are doing. For example, in one experiment, one or more confederates would look up into the sky; bystanders would then look up into the sky to see what they were seeing. At one point this experiment was aborted, as so many people were looking up that they stopped traffic. So, collect evidence which demonstrates what you can do, to get the decision you want. For example: References, Testimonials, Case Studies, Experience, Referrals.
